Errors in the use of Adverbs

Errors in the use of Adverbs:   An adverb is a word that adds something to the meaning of a verb, an adjective or another adverb.

A) Adverbs of manner usually go in the end-position.

  • Incorrect: She angrily spoke.
  • Correct: She spoke angrily.
  • B) Very is used without much before an adjective or adverb in the positive degree.

  • Incorrect: I am very much worried about his health.
  • Correct: I am very worried about his health.
  • Incorrect: The situation is very much serious.
  • Correct: The situation is very serious.
  • C) We do not use quite before a comparative adjective.

  • Incorrect: This movie is quite more interesting than the other movie.
  • Correct: This movie is a lot more interesting than the other movie.
  • D) We use ago to count from now. We use before to count from a past moment. Before long means soon.

  • (Incorrect): Before long there was no one there.
  • (Correct): Long ago there was no one there.
  • E)  If a negative word is put at the beginning of a sentence, it is usually followed by auxiliary verb + subject.

  • (Incorrect): Never I have seen such a mess.
  • (Correct): Never have I seen such a mess.
  • F)  Know cannot be directly followed by an infinitive. Instead we use the structure know how to.

  • Incorrect: I know to swim.
  • Correct: I know how to swim.
  • Incorrect:

  • Ram goes there frequently.
  • Here ,the error is fequently because fequently is an adverb which is  used before the  action verb.
  • He is enough intelligent to solve this problem.
  • Of course you will get his job.
  • Here, of course is not a right adverb to be used.
  • He went directly to his house.
  • Here,directly is wrong adverb .
  • We yet have time to catch the train.
  • Here, yet is a wrong adverb to be used here.

  • Ram frequently goes there.
  • He is intelligent enough to solve this problem.
  • You will certainly get this job.
  • He went direct to his house.
  • We still have time to catch the train.
